Put numbers on the confidence-versus-prediction gap

You fit a regression on n=100n = 100 points with residual standard deviation s=3s = 3. You want an interval at x0=xˉx_0 = \bar x (the center of the data, so the extrapolation term is negligible).

Compute the confidence-interval and prediction-interval half-widths (use z1.96z \approx 1.96), and give their ratio.

Show a hint

At x0=xˉx_0 = \bar x the leverage term drops out, leaving 1/n1/n for the confidence interval and 1+1/n1 + 1/n for the prediction interval, inside the square root.

Your answer

This one is open-ended. Work it through, then check your reasoning against the full solution.
